Product Description
Lexington, Kentucky, the "Horse Capital of the World," celebrates its 250th year in 2025. This beautiful city in the heart of Bluegrass Country surrounds itself in everything horse. The geological features of the area, including the limestone soil and rich bluegrass, have made it one of the greatest places in the world for horses to grow strong. Visitors can tour legendary horse farms, get lost exploring the Kentucky Horse Park, cheer on the fastest horses in the world at Keeneland Race Course, and relax downtown for a good meal surrounded by famous equine murals and sculptures. One of the images you will see throughout the city is "Big Lex" – a blue-tinted adaptation of an oil painting by Edward Troye of the real-life Thoroughbred stallion, Lexington, that has become a symbol of the city. Legend has it that "Big Lex" turned blue from grazing the nourishing bluegrass his entire life!
The real Lexington was foaled in 1850 near present-day Lexington, Kentucky, and would become one of the fastest and most durable runners of his time. He won six of his seven races, which included several grueling 4+ mile events, and earned $56,600 (more than $2 million in today's money) on the track. Surviving the Civil War though clever moves and hideouts during crucial battles, he would persevere to become one of the sport's great sires – Lexington led America’s sire list for 14 consecutive years, plus an additional two posthumously, and more than a third of his 600+ foals were proven winners on the track. His bloodlines continue through modern great racehorses such as Holy Bull and Tiznow. You can still pay homage to Lexington today – his skeleton is on display at the Kentucky Horse Park's International Museum of the Horse, on permanent loan from the Smithsonian Institution.
Visit Lexington, and his namesake city, in July for BreyerFest®. This hands-on, family-friendly festival celebrates everything equestrian, including the Breyer brand’s 75th anniversary in 2025!
Breyer is thrilled to have Big Lex join our herd in 2025 - the year of celebrations!
