The Shetland originated in the Shetland Isles.

They have heavy coats and short legs, and are naturally hardy and constitutionally strong.

Although originally used for working purposes, they are now also known for riding and showing.

Shetland ponies are generally gentle, good tempered, and very intelligent by nature.
